The Agua Caliente Mission Band of Cahuilla Indians of Palm Springs (Palm Springs earliest settlers) owns and operates the upscale and new (opened in 2008) 12-story Agua Caliente Spa, Casino & Resort Hotel adjacent to Rancho Mirage Interstate 10 and Bob Hope Drive. Set along the Interstate, the spa hotel is detached from the main part of the city of Rancho Mirage and stands alone without a residential housing surrounding it. According to 2000 US census information, Rancho Mirage was home to about 13,000 year-round residents with approximately 6,800 households, and approximately 4,000 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 92.69% White, 0.89% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 3.62% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.44% of the population.
Rancho Mirage was founded and officially incorporated as a city in 1973 from a merger of Mirage Cove with five neighborhood areas known as the "Cove communities" of Rancho Mirage including Desert Cove, Magnesia Cove, Palmas Cove, Tamarisk and Thunderbird. In 1973 when Rancho Mirage was incorporated it had only about 3,000 residents.
